Sami
culture
The Sami are our native people, one of
the few in Europe. The land of the Sami is known as Sápmi
and stretches from Idre in the province of Dalarna to the Kola
Peninsula in Russia. Thirty-two of Sweden’s 51 Sami villages
are in Norrbotten.
Reindeer herding is perhaps the most well known Sami occupation
(only Sami may herd reindeer in accordance with Swedish law),
but other traditional Sami occupations include fishing, hunting
and handcrafts.
The rich Sami language has 300 words for snow and their characteristic
clothing, known as a kolt, is often richly embellished.
